"Can you repair my precious item?" Among the lacquerware brought to our store are products from various regions, including Wajima lacquerware. We accept items from customers, regardless of their manufacturer, and have repaired over 500 pieces of lacquerware to date.
Lacquerware manufacturing techniques vary depending on the region of production, and repair methods also vary, so some stores will only undertake repairs on products other than Wajima lacquerware.

This is when you need a "repair"

Wajima lacquerware is robust and elegant. We are proud that many families have used it for generations. However, as it is used over many years, it is inevitable that it will be dropped or misused. Even Wajima lacquerware is not invincible to any shock or stress. With normal use, it is more durable than any other piece of ware, but an impact can cause the corners to crack or peel. Misuse can cause the surface to become cloudy. When this happens, it is time to consider repairs. While it is difficult to restore chipped or damaged lacquerware made from other materials, it is possible with lacquerware, especially Wajima lacquerware.

Wajima lacquerware uses a "cloth-covering" technique, in which fabric is used to reinforce areas prone to chipping, such as the edges of the wood, and then layers of jinko (finely crushed diatomaceous earth) and rice paste and raw lacquer are applied. Regarding repairs, due to the robust nature of Wajima lacquerware, scratches and peeling do not penetrate deep into the surface, so your item can be restored simply by grinding off the surface top coat and applying a new top coat. When repairing lacquerware from other regions, different base coat techniques are used, and we often see lacquerware with deteriorated base coats or lacquerware with peeling between the base and the wood. For repairs of severely damaged items, we first restore the item to its bare wood state and then apply the base coat, intermediate coat, and top coat using the hon-kataji technique. Because these are precious items, we prioritize restoring them while preserving as much of the original wood as possible. Therefore, depending on the item, the repair cost may be more than the original purchase price. We will carefully explain and discuss the matter in advance, but we ask for your understanding in advance. Repair methods are divided into two categories: full repair and partial repair, and you can choose the method that best suits your needs.
